Functions of Stator Motor
Engine cranking: The primary function of the stator motor is to provide the initial rotational force required to crank the engine. It generates high torque to overcome the initial resistance and move the engine’s internal components, such as the pistons and crankshaft, into motion.
Ignition activation: In many generators, the stator motor is also responsible for activating the ignition system. As the engine cranks, the stator motor engages the flywheel or ring gear, which in turn triggers the ignition system, leading to the combustion process and subsequent engine operation.
Compression buildup: During startup, the stator motor helps build up compression within the engine’s cylinders. As the engine cranks, the pistons move up and down, compressing the air-fuel mixture or air (in the case of a diesel engine). Sufficient compression is necessary for efficient combustion and smooth engine operation.
Lubrication circulation: Another function of the stator motor is to circulate lubricating oil throughout the engine. When the stator motor rotates, it activates the oil pump, which ensures that vital engine components receive proper lubrication. Adequate lubrication reduces friction, wear, and heat generation, enhancing the engine’s longevity and performance.
Battery power utilization: The stator motor draws electrical power from the generator’s battery to perform its functions. It converts electrical energy into mechanical energy to crank the engine. Once the engine starts running, the alternator takes over and provides electrical power to the generator, including recharging the battery.
The Working Principle Of The Stator Motor
The motor contains an armature rotating inside a magnetic field. The armature shaft ends in a pinion and, in some types of the starter, a set of gears. When your turn on the ignition key of press the engine starting button, a current flows through the ignition circuit and activates the starter relay. The relay on the other hand, sends power to a part of starter motor called starter solenoid.
The starter motor solenoid acts as a large switch or relay and sends current from the battery directly to the motor. The solenoid also moves a lever, helping to push a pinion gear to mesh with the ring gear on the flywheel or flexplate. These two events happen almost concurrently. The motor then rotates the flywheel, turning the engine over and starting it.
When you release the ignition key, the ignition circuit stops sending current and the starter relay disconnects power to the starter solenoid. With the starter solenoid having no current flowing, it loses its magnetism and releases the plunger.
The plunger returns to its former position, disconnecting the motor circuit and pulling back the pinion drive gear from the flywheel or flex plate. At this time, the engine can run on its own.
