Fault Signals And Solutions Of Stator Coil & Flywheel Magneto

Dead Battery

If your battery keeps dying, even after being fully charged, it could be a sign that your stator coil is not generating enough power to keep the battery charged.

Flickering Lights

If your lights are flickering or dimming, it could be a sign that the stator coil is not providing a consistent supply of electricity.

Difficulty Starting

If it takes more than a few attempts to start your motorcycle, it could be a sign that the stator coil is not providing enough power to activate the ignition system.

Electrical Overheating

If your stator coil is not functioning correctly, it can generate excessive heat that can cause other electronic components to malfunction.

If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, it's essential to diagnose the problem quickly. To diagnose a bad stator coil, you'll need to take some steps:

Check the Voltage

Use a multimeter to check the voltage output of the stator coil. If the voltage is below its recommended range, it could be a sign that the stator coil is bad.

Inspect the Wiring

Check the wiring and connections between the stator coil and the other electronic components. Loose or damaged wiring can cause electrical issues.

Test the Regulator-Rectifier

If the stator coil is generating the correct voltage, check the regulator-rectifier, which converts the AC voltage from the stator coil to DC voltage for the battery.

FAQ

Q: How do a magneto and stator work?

A: Magneto stators consist of permanent magnets that are used to create a magnetic field. This magnetic field, when in contact with the rotor, generates DC power and creates an electromagnetic system. It is this electromagnetic system that helps a motor to function.

Q: How far should the magneto be from the flywheel?

A: Magnetos should be set to an air gap of . 010" from the magnets in the flywheel. If you do not have a feeler guage, a fair alternative is to use a standard business card - it will get you very close the proper gap.

Q: How to tell if a magneto coil is bad?

A: Ideally, the readout should be between 3 k and 15 k. If it's higher than that, check the connection between the high voltage wire and the spark plug, then test again. If the multimeter reads O.L., the Magneto coil likely has a short.

Q: Do you need a battery if you have a magneto?

A: Most small lawn mowers, chain saws, trimmers and other small gasoline engines do not need a battery. Instead, they actually generate the power for the spark plug using a magneto.

Q: How does a stator coil work?

A: The stator is the coil of wire housed inside the engine case. A magnet on a shaft spins within the stator, creating alternating current. The current travels along fairly heavy-gauge wire through the case and into the rectifier/regulator which converts it to DC power, and at a consistent output.
