Functions of Crankshaft

01

Power Conversion

The primary function of the crankshaft is to convert the pistons’ linear motion into rotational motion, and this is what drives the output shaft of an engine.

02

Lubrication Regulation

The crankshafts help regulate the distribution of oil required for lubrication in an engine.

03

Power Delivery

The counterweights on the crankshaft transfer power to the pistons as and when required. The controlled power delivery ensures the overall efficiency of the internal combustion engine.

Material of Crankshaft

Manganese-molybdenum steel
Crankshafts manufactured using manganese-molybdenum steels are done using the forging process. The crankshafts are cheap and are used for moderate-duty petrol engines. It consists of 1.5% manganese, 0.3% molybdenum, 0.38% carbon, and 97.82% iron. The Brinell hardness number of manganese-molybdenum steel is around 250 BHN.

Chromium-molybdenum Steel
This type of steel is used for medium and heavy-duty petrol and diesel prices. It consists of 1.2%chromium, 0.4% molybdenum, 0.3% carbon and the rest is iron. Brinell hardness number for Chromium-molybdenum Steel is about 280 BHN.

Nickel-chromium-molybdenum Steel
The fatigue strength of these steels is very high and is used in diesel engines. It consists of 2.5% of nickel, 0.31% carbon, 0.65% chromium, 0.5% molybdenum and the remaining is iron. The Brinell hardness number for this steel is 300 BHN.

Nodular cast iron
Nodular cast iron is a grey cast iron that has graphite nodules in perlite medium. These are also known as ductile cast iron due to their high ductility. The carbon content and silicon content are around 3-4% and 1.8-2.8% respectively. The Brinell hardness number of nodular cast iron is around 200-300BHN.

The Working Principle Of The Crankshaft

Step 1

The crankshaft pushes the piston from the top centre to the bottom centre in a downward motion via the connecting rod.

Step 2

Thereafter, the crankshaft undergoes the task of converting the piston’s linear motion into a rotary motion which is then transmitted by the crankshaft to the camshaft.

Step 3

The camshaft, upon receiving the rotary motion from the camshaft, allows the entry of the air-fuel mixture. And as the piston moves upward, the camshaft closes the exhaust marking the completion of the compression process.

Step 4

Next is the ignition phase, wherein the compressed mixture ignites, forcing the piston to move downward and transferring motion to the crankshaft.

Step 5

The crank has two ends where one end is connected to the engine and the other to the flywheel. As the crankshaft receives the linear motion of the piston, it converts it into the rotary motion.

Step 6

As a next step, the rotary motion is transferred to the flywheel, which stores the motion to power vehicular wheel movement.

FAQ

Q: How do you know if your crankshaft is going bad?

A: You can tell if the crankshaft is damaged just by listening the engine run. If you hear a knocking sound when you accelerate or any other condition you know that your crankshaft may be damaged. It could be your connecting rod bearings for your main bearings.

Q: How to know if a crankshaft needs to be replaced?

A: The check engine light on your dashboard illuminates.
Your oil pressure is low, which might cause the oil light on your dashboard to come on.
You hear knocking or rattling noises when you accelerate.
You feel shaking or vibration when you're driving, particularly at high speeds.

Q: What are the symptoms of an unbalanced crankshaft?

A: If you notice decreased performance of your engine, excessive vibration, noise or heat, this is an indication that the crankshaft requires balancing. If left unresolved, it can cause excessive wear and tear on the engine and result in shorter engine life.

Q: What damages the crankshaft?

A: Improper crankshaft installations can cause the crankshaft to become misaligned or damaged, leading to failure. This can be caused by incorrect torque specifications, incorrect balance, or other installation issues. Improper installation can also increase the stress on the crankshaft, causing it to fail faster.

Q: What is a crankshaft used for?

A: A crankshaft is a crucial component in engines that converts the reciprocating (back-and-forth) motion of pistons into rotational motion, which is then used to power machinery, like a car's wheels. It essentially acts as a bridge, translating the linear movement of the pistons into the circular motion needed for driving.
